With a short flight from the east coast and without the need of a passport, US travelers can be in a tropical paradise that takes US currency and English is mainly spoken in around 3-5 hours depending on your location from the east coast. Offering a diverse range of natural attractions including beautiful sandy beaches with turquoise waters to lush rain forests and mountainous terrain, Puerto Rico has something for everyone at any age. I recently spent two weeks exploring the island with my wife and two children. My younger daughter spent three days learning to surf in the protected cove of Jobos beach, or seeing the cool bio luminescent bays at night to visiting El Yunque National Forest. Surfing, snorkeling, sailing, kayaking, hiking, exploring old forts and lighthouses, let me ensure that your next trip is to Puerto Rico is spectacular!

In late July 2024 my family and I took an amazing trip to Puerto Rico. We spent 15 full days on the island exploring both the east and west side of the island. If you aren't aware PR is a US territory which means if you are traveling from the US no passport is needed, US currency is accepted, and the locals can speak English though Spanish is the main language. We arrived in San Juan via Jet Blue direct flight from DC, and immediately grabbed our rental car and headed to our first destination Isabela. We stayed at a great little ABNB within walking distance of Shacks Beach. We arrived later in the day so only our feet went into the crystal clear water and enjoyed the beautiful sunset. We had a fabulous dinner at a great local spot called Ola Lola's Garden. We spent 10 days in Isabela where we went to many different beaches including snorkeling at Shacks Beach, Montones beach was great for the kids because there is two protected coves as well as a restaurant if you get hungry; Crash boat beach was a little down the road but it was awesome to jump off the pier. The water was very calm at Crash Boat. My six year old daughter spent three days learning to surf at beautiful Jobos beach with a local who gave a private lesson. One day we took a drive to Gozalandia Waterfalls and spent most of the day in the freshwater pools, locals and tourists were jumping from the top of the waterfall into the pool below. For breakfast I would recommend Blessings cafe, it was so delicious we had to eat here several times. We took a drive to Cabo Rojo to see the old lighthouse and a great view from the sea cliffs, then we headed over to La Parguera to check out a night time Bio luminescent tour, since we have younger children we opted for the boat tour instead of the kayaks. Also in the town squares on certain nights they have art walks where local vendors come to sell handmade items and food. One beach that we visited that I would not recommend was Combate Beach, very dirty and water was not clear. With our 10 days finished in Isabela we packed up the car and headed over to Fajardo on the east end of the island. With our first day we went down to the port and hopped on a snorkeling day tour of Icacos Island which I booked using Viator. It was a great experience, food was provided and after the snorkeling we got some beach relaxing time on the Island. Also while staying in Fajardo we visited seven seas beach, Luquillo beach, and Playa Fortuna Beach. Some great breakfast spots that I would recommend is Dulce Aroma and Las Vistas Cafe which was excellent. The owner comes around and makes sure everyone is getting exceptional service. We also visited El Yunque National Forest which is an amazing rainforest with lots of hiking, just beware it closes at 5pm. No trip would be complete without a visit to old San Juan where we got to walk around exploring all the shops and got some authentic gelato at Anita's. We spent a long day traveling home the next day, I would highly recommend skipping connecting flights if you have the option. Overall we had an amazing time with great experiences that my kids will remember forever.
