The famous St Mark's Square in Venice

My husband's family has a tradition of celebrating birthday in Venice, Italy. The first time I went there, I was just amazed at everything I saw; from the water taxi that we had to take from the airport to the hotel to the amazing architecture of the city. The fact that there's absolutely no car and everyone has to walk or take a boat to places is just refreshing.

Since it was five of us, we ended up renting an apartment which came with a piano, a nice kitchen and a rooftop overlooking the canal. We use the rooftop a lot during the trip to have evening cocktail, Punt e Mes, an Italian vermouth. One time we went there during the Regatta, which is a historical boat race event that happens every year and being able to witness that from our rooftop was just amazing.

In the morning, we would stop by a local coffee shop for an espresso and a biscotti. One time we went to a fish market and got some fresh fish and shrimp to make dinner. There's no shortage of local restaurants, bakeries and gelato shops in Venice. If you want to live like a local, you have to try Cicchetti, the Venetian version of tapas, at a local Bacaro.

My favorite thing to do in Venice is to allow myself to "get lost" among the little alley streets which is easy to do without using the map. However, if you do this, you'll discovery little surprises at every corners that will delight you.

If you are like many people who always want to come to Venice or Italy or anywhere else in Europe but just don't have time to sit down and plan, I'm here to help. Venice is just so special that everyone should experience the city at least once.
