Sea Pines Lighthouse on Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina is one of the most idyllic beach locations in the eastern United States. Although known for its beautiful beaches and challenging golf course, HHI has something to offer all types of travellers.

In October, 2022, my wife and I decided to take a fall weekend trip to Hilton Head. Fall is a great time on the island as the season offers beautiful, sunny weather; still-warm waters; and less crowds.

Our weekend could not have been more perfect. Sun-drenched days in the mid-70s and cool, sweater-weather evenings. Our weekend started with a stop at Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina. This is a beautiful shopping and dining venue set along the intercoastal waterway and offers year-round dining, shopping, and water sports. After strolling through the quaint shops we stopped for lunch at the Quarter Deck where I enjoyed a house salad and some amazing she-crab soup and my wife enjoyed their special crab cake sandwich. For dinner, we visited the world-famous Salty Dog Cafe for some fresh-caught shrimp and a bowl of jambalaya to warm us up after sunset.

Our Saturday started with an Eco Wildlife Tour at Sea Pines Forest Preserve offered by H2O Sports. During our tour we got to see the largest alligator that I have ever seen in the wild. She was at least 14 feet long! After our tour, we stopped by Coligny Plaza for a bit more shopping and lunch at the Frosty Frog Cafe where we enjoyed group tacos and pizza. For dinner, we visited Hudson's on the Docks, where we not only enjoyed some wonderful fresh fish. Hudson's is committed to serving seafood caught from the local waters that surround their docks. While dining at Hudson's we also had the chance to view a killer sunset.

Sunday, our last day on the island, we explored the iconic Sea Pines Resort. Sea Pines has over 5000 acres of land that includes gorgeous private homes, great restaurants, water sports, restaurants, boutique shops, and outstanding golfing. Harbour Town Golf Links, a world-renowned course and perennial stop on the PGA Tour, is in Sea Pines.

Our day in Sea Pines started with breakfast at the Salty Dog that included avacado toast for my wife and eggs and pancakes for me. And if you go, don't miss their great Bloody Mary Bar! Then we enjoyed a leisurely bike ride from South Beach (where the Salty Dog is located) to Harbour Town. Seas Pines offers bikers a 15-mile network of bike paths to enjoy. After our bike ride, we took in some beach time along the Calibogue Sound. With the sunlight glistening off the calm sound waters, we saw dolphins swim so close to shore that we could almost touch them and watched shrimp trawlers returning to the marina after a day catching Hilton Head's most popular seafood. Our weekend drew to a close with another awesome sunset and burgers, shrimp, and beers at the casual Up the Creek Pub.

All in all, we enjoyed a most memorable weekend on Hilton Head Island and vowed to return every fall season.
