Kazakhstan might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of travel, but trust me when I say it’s a destination that will surprise and amaze you. I recently had the chance to explore this vast and stunning country, and I came back with a new appreciation for its beauty, culture, and the incredible warmth of its people.The first thing you notice about Kazakhstan is its size. It’s the ninth-largest country in the world, and the landscapes are just as grand. From the endless steppe to snow-capped mountains and sparkling lakes, the variety of scenery blew me away. It feels like there’s always something new to discover around every corner.One of my favorite places was Almaty, Kazakhstan’s former capital and its cultural hub. The city has a mix of modern and Soviet-era architecture, surrounded by stunning mountain backdrops. The highlight for me was visiting the Medeu skating rink, the highest ice rink in the world. Even if you’re not into ice skating, the views alone are worth the trip. Just a short drive away is Shymbulak, a ski resort that’s perfect for winter sports enthusiasts or anyone who just wants to breathe in the fresh mountain air.Another can’t-miss spot is Charyn Canyon. It’s often called the “Grand Canyon” of Kazakhstan, but it’s got its own unique charm. Walking through the canyon, you’re surrounded by towering red rock formations that look like they belong on another planet. The quiet and stillness there were something I won’t forget.For nature lovers, Kazakhstan is a paradise. The Kolsai Lakes and Lake Kaindy are two of the most beautiful spots I’ve ever seen. The turquoise waters of the Kolsai Lakes reflect the surrounding forests and mountains like a mirror. And Lake Kaindy? It’s famous for the submerged trees that rise out of the water, creating an almost mystical scene. If you’re a photographer or just someone who loves finding hidden gems, you’ll fall in love with these places.Kazakhstan’s culture is just as impressive as its landscapes. The country has a rich nomadic history, and you can still experience it today. I had the chance to visit a traditional yurt, where I tried kumis (fermented mare’s milk) and learned about the customs of the Kazakh people. It was such a unique and immersive experience.The people of Kazakhstan were another highlight of my trip. Everywhere I went, I was met with kindness, curiosity, and hospitality. Even when there was a language barrier, locals went out of their way to make me feel welcome. Whether it was sharing a meal or giving directions, the warmth I experienced added so much to my visit.One thing I wasn’t expecting? The food! Kazakh cuisine is hearty and delicious, with dishes like beshbarmak (a traditional noodle and meat dish) and shashlik (grilled skewers). If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also try horse meat, which is a staple in the local diet. The flavors are rich and comforting, perfect after a day of exploring.If you’re looking for a destination that’s off the beaten path but full of surprises, Kazakhstan should be at the top of your list.
