Denmark, the land of fairy tales, hygge (coziness), and modern design, offers a seamless blend of rich history and contemporary charm. My journey through this Scandinavian gem was filled with picturesque landscapes, cultural discoveries, and culinary delights, leaving me enchanted by its simplicity and beauty.Arrival in Copenhagen I began my trip in Copenhagen, Denmark’s vibrant capital. The city immediately charmed me with its colorful waterfront buildings in Nyhavn, a historic harbor lined with cafes and restaurants. Strolling along the cobblestone streets, I could feel the city’s relaxed yet dynamic energy.A visit to the Tivoli Gardens, one of the world’s oldest amusement parks, was a nostalgic treat. The park’s whimsical rides, twinkling lights, and lush gardens made me feel like I’d stepped into a Hans Christian Andersen tale. Nearby, I marveled at the iconic Little Mermaid statue, a homage to one of Denmark’s most beloved storytellers.Castles and History Denmark’s royal heritage was on full display at Rosenborg Castle and Amalienborg Palace. Rosenborg, with its opulent interiors and Crown Jewels, offered a glimpse into the country’s regal past, while the changing of the guard ceremony at Amalienborg was a fascinating spectacle.A short train ride from Copenhagen brought me to Kronborg Castle in Helsingør, famously known as the setting for Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Exploring the grand halls and underground passages, I could see why this UNESCO World Heritage Site inspired the Bard himself.Exploring Danish Design Denmark is synonymous with innovative design, and the Design museum Denmark showcased the nation’s creativity and craftsmanship. From sleek furniture to modern art, I gained a deep appreciation for the minimalist yet functional aesthetics that define Danish style. The city’s cycling culture was another highlight. Renting a bike, I joined locals in navigating Copenhagen’s well-maintained bike lanes, discovering hidden neighborhoods and cozy cafes along the way.Day Trip to Odense A visit to Odense, the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, was like stepping back in time. The cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses evoked a bygone era. The Hans Christian Andersen Museum provided fascinating insights into the life and works of the world-famous author.Hygge and Culinary Delights Embracing hygge was a key part of my trip. I spent hours in candlelit cafes, savoring Danish pastries and sipping aromatic coffee. Smørrebrød, Denmark’s open-faced sandwiches, became a favorite lunchtime treat, especially when topped with fresh seafood. For a fine dining experience, I visited a Michelin-starred restaurant in Copenhagen, where I enjoyed a Nordic-inspired menu featuring locally sourced ingredients. The blend of flavors was as innovative as it was delicious.Nature and Serenity Denmark’s natural beauty shone during a trip to Møn’s Klint, chalk cliffs along the Baltic Sea. The dramatic white cliffs and turquoise waters were breathtaking, and the hiking trails offered stunning views of the coastline.Another serene escape was the countryside of Funen, often called the "Garden of Denmark." Rolling hills, apple orchards, and quaint villages provided a peaceful contrast to the urban energy of Copenhagen.Farewell to Denmark As my trip came to an end, I realized Denmark had left an indelible mark on my heart. Its harmonious blend of history, innovation, and natural beauty made for an unforgettable experience. From the bustling streets of Copenhagen to the tranquil shores of Møn, Denmark had shown me the true meaning of “hygge” – a sense of warmth and contentment that stays with you long after you leave. 4o       O

I loved working with Mary when she helped plan our girls trip to FT. Lauderdale in 2016. She handled everything from booking the flights to the booking a wonderful hotel right in the beach.
