Shirley and Daniel In Jerusalem

After the flight from PHX-LAX-IST-TLV began with a tour of the ancient city of Jaffa, which has a large Arab Christian population living side-by-side with the Jewish residents. We visited the ancient seaport, from which the Prophet Jonah fled from God (Jonah 1:2).Jaffa is the city where Peter stayed with Simon the Tanner and restored Tabitha (Dorcas) to life (Acts 9:36-43).

The  Peres  Center  for  peace  and  innovation, touched the future of Israel, widely known as the “start-up nation”. Israel is recognized as a major player in the fields of innovation, R & D and entrepreneurship. A must see. This is not on the route for most Christian tours.

We drove along the Mediterranean shoreline to visit Caesarea. Built by Herod the Great Caesarea once was the seat of Roman rule. View the excavated Roman Theater, with its acoustic and theatrical sound, which was used for many performances throughout the centuries. Onto Mt Carmel and Haifa, for a viewpoint on the Bahai Gardens.  Then to World Heritage site of Acre, an exceptional historic walled port-city with continuous settlement from the Phoenician period. Acre became the capital of the Crusaders after they lost Jerusalem.

In the morning we went to Magdala, to see the recent discovered First Century Synagogue, where it is certain that Jesus taught. Inside the synagogue they also found The Magdala Stone, a discovery many archaeologists call the most significant archaeological find in the past 50 years.

Onto ancient synagogue in Capernaum. According to Christian tradition, many of Jesus’s miracles were performed in this ancient fishing village. Then on to Mount of Beatitudes; North of the Sea of Galilee. Atop the Beatitudes Mount, lies a beautiful church with an octagonal dome that represents the 8 “Beatitudes” of the sermon on the mount.

Then we drove up north to the foothills of Mt. Hermon where the source of the Jordan River at Caesarea Philippi (Banias), where Peter made his great confession of faith. The Golan Heights and on Mount Bental touch on the geopolitics of the area and a welcome coffee break. Via Cana of Galilee to Nazareth, the hometown of Jesus, and we visited the Basilica of the Annunciation, a modern Catholic Church built over the remains of Byzantine and Crusader churches. It incorporates the cave in which the Virgin Mary received the news from Gabriel that she would give birth to Jesus.

Into Jordan Valley to Beth Shean. Beit Shean was a major Biblical city, one of the ten Decapolis, located in the center of major trade routes. The Hellenistic city, Scythopolis, was established near its ruins and became a major city until its destruction in the 8th C. We drove south along the Jordan Valley heading towards Jerusalem, to visit the traditional site of Baptism at Qasr El Yahud, the area of the first baptism on Jordan River, where John baptized Jesus. At Yad Vashem, the official memorial to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, established in 1953 and located on Mt. Herzl.

Then we visited the Israel Museum. We saw a scale model of Jerusalem from the Second Temple period and the Dead Sea Scrolls in the Shrine of the Book.

Above the Mt. of Olives a great view of Jerusalem: Overlooking the Old City, the mountain is covered partly in olive trees, cemeteries and churches - commemorate the Christian events of Jesus.  We descended  Mt Olive   to   visit   the Garden   of Gethsemane alongside the Church of All Nations.

We entered the Old City of Jerusalem and walked along the Via Dolorosa (Stations of the Cross), the path that Jesus walked on his way to being crucified, and visit the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the holiest site in Christianity. This is sire where Jesus was buried and was resurrected. The Western Wall; Most sacred place for the Jewish people, the remains of the wall that surrounded Temple Mount.

We departed early to the Dead Sea area to visit Masada. 500 meters high above the Dead Sea, the fortress of Masada is set on a giant cliff, 600 m. length, 300 m. width and 2000 years old - the greatest castle in history build by King Herod’s. A cable car took us up to the cliff, to an unforgettable tour of the palaces, the warehouses and resident areas, the water complex, the impressive fortified system and to the most fascinating views of the Judean Desert.
