Our group for the solar eclipse 2019 in Chile.
In Santiago, the market was our first stop. We had a lunch consisting of ceviche, calamari, shrimp, white fish and fries. We began lunch with a pisco sour. I returned here for lunch on the final day of the tour. The bill for four of us was over $150. Our clients received a great meal to begin the tour. They all had a glass of wine too.
In the Atacama desert we stayed at the Alto Atacama Lodge and Spa. The rooms were decorated in what we call a western motif. They call it Chilean. Our room had an outdoor shower. The indoor shower had a heated floor and nice view of the river bed outside. They had an on-site astronomy program including a telescope and observing area.
The grounds at the Alto Atacama had gardens, alfalfa, llamas, a mineral garden, three swimming pools and nice paths crossing the grounds. The lodge is where fine dining takes place and of course the bar. Pisco sours and wines were the most popular items.
We did two excursions daily. The flamingo lakes took a long time. The guide, as all guides do talked forever on the whole life cycle of the shrimp the flamingos eat. The western town with the Clint Eastwood bell tower could have been the scene of many of westerns. Moon Valley and the rocks, the Tapito geysers, Rainbow Canyon were just some of the highlights of this, one of the driest deserts on the earth.
Back to the south we go to La Serena. Nearby were wineries, a pisco distillery, and observatories in the hills. The solar eclipse festival was in full bloom.
We observed the eclipse atop a mountain. After sunset you could see lines of cars stuck in traffic headed back to La Serena. We dined in our tented camp and left for La Serena after midnight.
We met several very nice Chilean people, dined on gourmet food, llama, beef and seafood. We drank fine wines and toured vineyards. Chile has much to offer. Give us a shout to plan your tour.
