The Painted Desert is part of the northern section of the Park; therefore, your travel back in time is not quite complete (most of the rest of it resides in remote areas of the Navajo Nation). Forget what you imagine the Painted Desert is said to look like. You have to see it yourself. The land is saturated in color - from rich crimson to exquisite lavender, like the sunset left its mark on the landscape. While you’re there, visit the Painted Desert Inn National Historic Landmark, which is close to the Petrified Forest National Park's north gate.
