Hidden Gem in South America
Hidden Gem in South America

Have you ever thought of traveling to Uruguay? If not, I can tell you’re in for a treat if you make this your vacation designation. As a travel agent professional for Uruguay, I can share with you some amazing sites and attractions - exciting places that you may not know really exist. So, where is Uruguay and why should you make it a part of your holiday plans? While Uruguay is the second smallest country on the South American continent, it offers a great deal in relaxation and pleasure. Located along the southeast coast, the country is known for its green vegetation and beaches. The capital of Montevideo surrounds the Plaza Independencia, once the hub of the Spanish citadel. While you’re in the capital, I recommend that you walk through Cuidad Vieja, or the “Old City.” You will love its colonial architecture, Art Deco buildings, and the old port market of Mercado del Puerto - home to a large number of steakhouses. The waterfront promenade, La Rambla, greets visitors with its piers, family-friendly parks, and fish stalls. Montevideo, in and of itself, offers plenty for a tourist to do - from exploring Uruguayan culture to enjoying delicious food and an exciting nightlife. You also don’t want to miss a visit to Colonia del Sacramento, a historic colonial city that is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was originally established by the Portuguese in the seventeenth century.  Located in southwest Uruguay, the city sits across from Rio de La Plata, close to Buenos Aires. Known for Barrio Historico, a cobblestoned district, the city goes back to a time when the palace was a Portuguese settlement. It also features the Colonia del Sacramento LIghthouse, which features lovely river views. Old city walls still are found in the remnants of Porton de Campo. When you stroll through the Barrio, be on the lookout then for the old walls and city gate with drawbridge. The ruins of a seventeenth-century convent highlight spectacular views of the neighborhood, located along the waterfront. You’ll find the place a mecca of hotels, museums and restaurants. If you’re seeking a beach holiday in Uruguay, my suggestion is Punta del Este, the most popular beach resort in the country. While it began as a small town, it evolved into a resort for jet-setters from North and South America. If you want to see sea lions, you’ll love visiting the unique coastal town of Cabo Polonio. This unique hamlet sits on the east coast of Uruguay in the Rocha Department. You cannot get to it by a roadway. Instead, you can only get there by going through dunes with a 4x4 vehicle or by walking.  If you’re seeking to learn more about Uruguay’s culture and history, I suggest a trip to Salto, the largest city in the country’s interior. Located in the northwest, the city borders the Uruguay River and Argentina. In the center of the city is Calle Uruguay, a lively place to shop that is also lined with eateries and cafes.  You can also visit the Cathedral San Juan Bautista, which features paintings and a vintage 1939 Hammond organ. The Termas del Dayman, just southeast of the city, is home to natural hot springs and outdoor spas and pools. Known for its rolling hills, friendly people, delicious food, and unique culture, Uruguay is a country of contrasts.
